A rain affected first day at the Oval was highlighted by Alastair Cook’s brilliant 82 not out.
The day started with England handing debuts to Toby Roland-Jones, Tom Westley and Dawid Malan. England won the toss and elected to bat but this did not look like a great plan when Jennings fell for a duck leaving the score 12-1. Cook and Westley settled the ship until Westley fell to Morris after lunch for 25, a good innings for the debutant. This brought in the captain Root and him and Cook put on 49 until an excellent catch from De Kock brought Root’s innings to a close. Now there was another debutant in Malan. Although he only made 1 he was bowled by the most amazing in swinging Yorker from Rabada. Then it was Stokes who was the next man in. So these two ticked along until rain stopped play.
At stumps the score was 171-4, with Cook on 82 and Stokes on 21, let’s hope there is more play tomorrow.
